Scientific Name: Ganoderma steyaertanum– Native Australian Reishi
Skill Level: Extremely Easy
Growing Time: Up to 2 months

Important: Check your fruiting temperature before purchasing and ensure you can provide the temperature this species needs.
1 kg or 3 kg — What’s the Difference?
This is important to understand before you choose your size.
1 kg
The 1 kg bag is smaller and does not have enough internal space for antler formation. It will only produce conks. To grow conks, the top of the bag is cut to allow fresh air in, which lowers CO₂ and triggers the classic bracket shape. Be aware that conks release heavy volumes of spores — see the spore warning below before purchasing.
3 kg
The 3 kg bag gives you the choice. Leave the bag sealed but upright and the mushrooms will grow as striking antlers inside the bag — no mess, no spores, and no maintenance. Or, if you prefer the traditional conk shape, open the top of the bag once antler has reached the top of the bag to allow fresh air in and let them form conks. Just be prepared for heavy sporulation if you go the conk route.
About This Kit
1KG
Yield: 100g (conks only)
Our 1 kg kits are premade and ready to go. No waiting, no lead time. No fancy box, no unnecessary packaging — just a fresh, ready-to-fruit bag.
3KG
Yield:450g (antlers or conks)
Our 3 kg kits are made fresh to order. We prepare your bag, wait for it to reach 60–70% colonisation, then send it straight to you. No fancy box, no endless sitting in cold storage.
Lead time applies to 3 kg kits only. The lead time shown above the “Add to Cart” button is the time needed to prepare your order. A product showing as “in stock” means it can be prepared within that lead time, not that it is ready to ship immediately. 1 kg kits ship within our standard handling time when in stock.
Zero Maintenance Kit
Everything you need is included — just follow the simple instructions.
This kit requires no misting. Simply place it in the right spot and let it do its thing. It is one of the easiest kits we offer.
Our substrate is a special Master’s Mix: a blend of sawdust and lupin hulls, inoculated with 300g of millet grain spawn to give your mushrooms the best possible start.
Microplastic Free
Soy Allergen Free
Gluten Free
Our bags: We use Unicorn grow bags, made in the USA. Unicorn is the only grow bag in the world independently tested by Eurofins (a third party lab in Europe) and certified to EN 1186 and USFDA 1520 standards for plastic migration into substrate. Tested at 121°C for 3.5 hours. No other PP or PE bag manufacturer has achieved this food safety standard.
About This Reishi
Ganoderma steyaertanum is a native Australian Reishi — celebrated for its glossy, lacquered fruiting bodies and adaptability. This is not the commonly known Ganoderma lucidum, which is the most researched Reishi species globally but is not permitted to be grown in Australia as it is listed as a pest species. What we grow is our own native Australian equivalent, and it shares many of the same celebrated properties.
Reishi is not a culinary mushroom — the fruiting bodies are woody and not pleasant to eat fresh. Instead, they are harvested, dried until completely crisp, and then powdered or steeped in hot water as a tea. Reishi tea is traditionally consumed in the evening before sleep and is widely studied for its calming and immune-supporting properties.
Depending on CO₂ levels, fruiting can take the form of glossy bracket conks or striking antler formations. Both are equally usable once dried.
Growing Conditions
Light: Indirect overhead light is important — Reishi uses light for directional growth.
Air: CO₂ levels determine the shape of your fruiting bodies. Higher CO₂ inside a sealed bag produces antlers. Lower CO₂ from opening the bag produces conks.
Temperature: 23°C–25°C.
Misting: Not required. This is a zero maintenance kit.
Need to Wait?
Once fully colonised, the bag can be stored in the fridge if you are not ready to fruit it. Keep in mind that fruiting bodies can take up to 2 months to fully mature, so if you are only going away for 1–2 weeks, it is fine to leave it fruiting. Keep the bag completely upright at all times — Reishi will seek out the air filter and grow through it if given the chance.
Harvesting and Drying
Harvest antlers or conks by cutting them at the base with a clean pair of scissors. Dry them in a dehydrator until they snap when bent — they must be completely dry before storing. Keep them in an airtight container with desiccants. Any moisture left in the mushroom before sealing will lead to mould.
Once harvested, discard the block. Reishi produces one flush only.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Opening the bag indoors without preparation: Once opened, conks will form and sporulate heavily. Be ready for it.
Laying the bag on its side: Always keep the bag completely upright. Reishi grows toward light and air and will find its way out of the filter patch if the bag is tipped.
Storing a semi-dry harvest: Ensure fruiting bodies are completely crisp and snap-dry before sealing in a container. Any residual moisture will cause mould.
3 kg kit: We recommend growing antlers inside the sealed bag, which produces no spores and requires zero maintenance. Only open the bag if you specifically want conks and are prepared for heavy sporulation.
1 kg kit: Conks are the only option, so be mindful of where you place the kit during fruiting. Some people are also allergic to Reishi spores, so take care.
Do not grow conks in a small, enclosed, or shared indoor space without being aware of the spore output.
Reishi is a notoriously heavy spore producer, far more so than any of our other kits. When conks form and mature, they release enormous volumes of rust-coloured spores that will coat every surface nearby. This is not a minor inconvenience — it can be a significant mess indoors.

This kit introduces you to Stage 3: Fruiting — the final step in mushroom growing. To explore all three stages (from spores to harvest), check out our Educational Mushroom Growing Kit.

Checkout out our fine Misting Spray Bottle to produce tiny droplets and keep humidity high. The size of droplets formed can easily be evaporated , this constant evaporation signals mycelium to pin.
