Description
Rootlab proudly sources this product right here in Australia. It is Australian made and TGA approved.
Hypochlorous acid is the disinfectant most mycology labs are missing. It is the very same compound your own immune system makes to destroy pathogens, which is exactly why it is so effective and yet so gentle at the same time. People are always surprised that something this non toxic can work this well.
HOCL is made purely by the electrolysis of salt water and nothing else. It is a hospital grade disinfectant used in genuine clinical and wound care settings, which tells you everything you need to know about how safe and how powerful it is. Yes, there is an acid in the name, but it will not burn you. It is completely safe around people, pets, animals, plants and your mushrooms.
Why it belongs in your lab
HOCL is your first line clean. Unlike alcohol, it is able to kill bacterial spores, and that is the real difference maker when you are up against stubborn bacterial contamination. If you have been struggling with bacterial issues in your grows or on your plates, this is the product that finally puts an end to it.
How to use it for mycology
Spray your surface and let the HOCL sit for at least 10 minutes so it has time to do its full job. Once that dwell time is up, wipe it down and let it dry. Then, right before you start working, give the surface a quick spray of alcohol as your final step, since alcohol simply evaporates and leaves everything ready to go. Think of HOCl as your deep clean and alcohol as the quick finishing touch just before pouring.
Great uses in the lab and grow room
Wipe down your stainless steel flow bench before pouring plates. Sanitise monotubs after washing, before the final alcohol wipe. Clean your air filters. You can even add it to a humidifier and run it while you and the mushrooms are together in the room, since it is completely safe around your grows. It is honestly one of the most versatile products you can keep on the shelf. We use it throughout our own mushroom farm to clean every bench and shelf, and we do not touch bleach at all.
For plant tissue culture
Clean plant samples : Use it at around 200 ppm to wash the outside of plant cuttings (explants), removing dirt and germs before they go into the growing jars.
Sterilise equipment : Soak tools, forceps and beakers in HOCL at around 500 ppm before use.
Maintain lab cleanliness : Wipe down benches, lab coats and work areas, and use it to sanitise water and surfaces.

How to use
Hard surfaces: Hold the bottle about 15 to 20 cm from the surface and spray until it is completely wet. Keep it wet for the full contact time shown on the organism table before wiping it down. Clean any dirty or greasy areas before you disinfect. On surfaces that touch food, rinse them with clean drinking water once you are done. Everything else can be left as is with no rinse needed.
To remove odours: Coat the surface with a light, even spray without drenching it, then simply let it dry on its own.
Fabrics and soft surfaces: From roughly 15 to 20 cm away, mist the material until it is damp but not saturated. Give it 3 minutes to work, then leave it to air dry, spraying again if you feel it needs it. Shake or brush off any loose dirt beforehand. If this is your first time treating a particular fabric, test a small out of sight patch first and check the maker’s care instructions.
Shipping and handling
HOCL is completely non toxic and safe to travel in the post. The product is priced a little higher for one simple reason: we take real care with our packing. Every bottle is wrapped properly and sealed inside zip lock bags, using multiple layers, so that in the rare event of any leakage nothing escapes and nothing is damaged. A little minor leakage can occasionally happen in transit, and our packing is designed so that it never becomes a problem for you. In the rare case that you do run into any issue, please contact us straight away and let us know, including pictures.
Storage: Keep the container tightly closed and store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, out of reach of children. Do not mix with strong acids or alkalis.
It is time to make the switch, especially if you have been relying on bleach in your facility. Feel better and more relaxed with HOCL.
