Wine Cap Mushroom Spawn โ€“ Stropharia rugosoannulata

Our premium Wine Cap Mushroom Spawn is perfect for anyone looking to grow their own delicious, nutrient-rich mushrooms at home or in the garden. Known scientifically as Stropharia rugosoannulata and often called the Garden Giant or King Stropharia, this variety produces large, meaty mushrooms with a mild, nutty flavour. Wine Caps are easy to grow and are a fantastic choice for both beginner and experienced cultivators.

Why Choose Wine Cap Mushroom Spawn

Wine Caps are one of the most rewarding mushrooms for outdoor cultivation. They are highly adaptable, thrive in a variety of climates, and grow well in garden beds, wood chips, and straw. Once established, they can fruit for several seasons, providing a steady supply of fresh mushrooms while also improving your soil health.

Ideal Growing Conditions

Wine Cap mushrooms prefer hardwood sawdust, wood chips, straw, or a mixture of these substrates. They can be grown directly in shaded garden beds or pathways. Simply mix the spawn into a prepared bed, water regularly to maintain moisture, and allow the mycelium to colonise the substrate. Under the right conditions, you can expect your first harvest in just a few months.

Benefits of Growing Wine Cap Mushrooms

  • Produces large, attractive mushrooms that are perfect for cooking
  • Improves soil quality by breaking down organic matter into rich compost
  • Helps suppress weeds when grown in mulched garden beds
  • Low maintenance and suitable for beginners
  • Can be grown alongside vegetables, creating a healthier garden ecosystem

Taste and Culinary Uses

Wine Cap mushrooms have a firm, meaty texture and a flavour often compared to roasted potatoes or sweet corn. They hold their shape well when cooked, making them excellent for stir-fries, grilling, soups, risottos, and pasta dishes. They can be eaten fresh or preserved by drying for later use.

How to Use This Spawn

  • Choose your growing location, ideally a shaded outdoor spot
  • Prepare a bed with hardwood chips, straw, or composted mulch
  • Mix in the Wine Cap spawn evenly throughout the substrate
  • Keep the bed moist but not waterlogged
  • Wait for the mycelium to colonise, then watch for mushrooms to appear after rainfall or in humid conditions

Long-Term Cultivation

With proper care, Wine Cap beds can produce mushrooms for multiple years. Each season, you can top up the bed with fresh wood chips or mulch to encourage new flushes and extend the life of your crop.

Check out all the variety of Grain Spawn on offer.

Grain-spawn mycelium, Gourmet and medicinal strains are available fully colonised for mushroom cultivation, made with excellent commercial-quality culture.
Ready-to-go bags! Cut your bag open, add to your pre-sterilised or pasteurised substrate or sterilised grains and allow it to colonise completely.
GENERAL GRAIN SPAWN INFORMATION-
  • Fully colonised and contaminant-free
  • 100% reputable Millet or Organic Rye
  • Calcium Carbonate added for supplementation
  • Gypsum is added to prevent grains from clumping together
  • It comes with a bit of Sawdust/ Manure or Straw to expose mycelium to its final substrate and reduce the lag period.
  • Grains are autoclaved and prepared at field capacity
Method to use:-
  • Add at least 5-20% grain spawn in your substrate. The amount of spawn you add depends on whether your substrate is sterilised or pasteurised, your experience level, and the type of mycelium used(Reishi and Oysters require less spawn than shiitake, Almond or Portobello).
  • The grains can also be transferred to more Sterilised Grain bags and expanded further.
  • Suppose you are using pasteurised substrate instead of the sterilised substrate. In that case, a higher grain spawn rate may lead to fewer chances of contamination, as higher grain spawning leads to faster colonisation.
Bags are assured 100% contaminant-free due to their sterilisation process of 2h at 15psi in a commercial autoclave. Moreover, we inoculate and heat-seal our bags before a 0.3-micron laminar flow hood. These strains are vigorous and fast-growing, reducing the chances of contamination once the substrate is added.
