WHY LUPIN OVER SOY

Built for mushrooms. Not for horses.

Soy hull pellets are manufactured as horse feed. The binding process uses oil as a binder – great for animals, but not what your substrate needs. Our Lupin Hull Pellets are different from the ground up.

We use steam to bind lupin hulls into pellet form with zero oil. After pressing, they go through a dehydrator to remove all residual moisture — a clean, dry, purpose-built substrate supplement with no added oils and no additives.

Switch from soy to lupin in your Masters Mix and expect 5 – 10% more yield across three flushes. Now used exclusively in all Rootlab growing operations.

HOW IT'S MADE

Manufactured specifically for mushroom growers

01

Steam binding

Lupin hulls compressed into pellet form using steam only. No oils, no chemical binders, no additives.

02

Dehydration

After pressing, pellets go through a dehydrator to remove all residual moisture – consistent and shelf-stable.

03

Ready to use

Clean, dry, built for Masters Mix. Drop in at the same 50/50 ratio. No recipe changes needed.

HOW TO PREPARE

Masters Mix preparation guide (3kg block)

  1. 1
Weigh out 525g hardwood sawdust pellets and 525g Lupin Hull Pellets into a large mixing container.
  2. 2
Add approximately 2 litres of water and mix thoroughly until combined. Boiling water speeds this up significantly.
  3. 3
Allow to sit for 30–60 minutes so pellets fully absorb and break down evenly.
  4. 4
Check field capacity — squeeze a firm handful and only 1–2 drops should come out. Not a stream, not bone dry.
  5. 5
Pack into an autoclavable mushroom grow bag. This ratio yields approximately a 3kg block.
  6. 6
Pressure sterilise at 15 PSI for 2.5 hours.
  7. 7
    Cool completely before inoculating.

If substituting hardwood pellets with raw sawdust, water requirements will differ. Start with less water and adjust to reach field capacity. The 2 litre figure is a starting point for pellets only.Adjust the ratio according to the amount of bags you want to produce.

SPECIES GUIDE

Which species grow best in Rootlab's Lupin Hulls Masters Mix?

Works Great with Masters Mix (50/50)
All Oyster Varieties Lion's Mane Coral Tooth Golden Enoki Maitake Reishi Chestnut Nameko Swordbelt Elf Most Wood-Loving Species
Prefers 80% Sawdust / 20% Bran Instead
Enoki Turkey Tail Shiitake Wood Ear

These four species prefer a leaner substrate and don't perform as well with heavy supplementation. This applies equally to soy and lupin hull Masters Mix.

Supply reliability

Available all year round - unlike soy
