Description
Australian Grown Non-GMO Lupin Hull Pellets for Mushroom Cultivation
If you’ve been using soy hull pellets in your Masters Mix, it’s time to make the switch.
Soy hull pellets were designed for horses. The binding process relies on oil — a great fat source for animals, but a disadvantage in your substrate block. Our Lupin Hull Pellets are built for one purpose: helping your mushrooms thrive.
We source Australian grown, non-GMO lupin hulls and pelletise them using steam binding — no oil, no additives. After pressing, they’re dehydrated to remove all moisture, giving you a clean, consistent, shelf-stable product every time. Store in a cool, dry place — shelf-stable for 12 months unopened.
How to prepare your Masters Mix (3kg block)
Weigh out 525g hardwood sawdust pellets and 525g Lupin Hull Pellets.
Add approximately 2 litres of water and mix thoroughly.
Allow to sit for 30–60 minutes until pellets fully absorb and break down (boiling water speeds this up).
Check field capacity — squeeze a firm handful and only 1–2 drops should come out.
Pack into an autoclavable mushroom grow bag.
Pressure sterilise at 15 PSI for 2.5 hours.
Cool completely before inoculating.
If substituting hardwood pellets with raw sawdust, water requirements will differ — start with less and adjust to field capacity. The 2 litre figure is a starting point for pellets only.
Which species work best?
Masters Mix suits all wood-loving species — all oyster varieties, Lion’s Mane, Coral Tooth, Golden Enoki, Maitake, Reishi, Chestnut, Nameko, Swordbelt, Elf, and more. Note that Enoki, Turkey Tail, Shiitake, and Wood Ear prefer a leaner substrate (80% sawdust, 20% bran) and don’t perform as well with heavy supplementation.
Expect 5–10% more yield than soy hull pellets, across three flushes.
Available all year round — unlike soy
Soy hull pellets run out multiple times a year in Australia, leaving growers scrambling mid-season or mid-batch. Our Lupin Hull Pellets are stocked and available consistently throughout the year. Plan your grows with confidence and never get caught short. Western Australia is the world’s largest lupin producer, giving us a stable local supply chain with no import dependency.
The Rootlab difference
We now grow all of our own mushrooms, including our Lion’s Mane supply, using these exact pellets. No soy in our operation. We sell what we use.
