Description

A large framed still air box with an angled front viewing window, two arm sleeves and a zippered side door. Sturdier and more stable than a pop-up, it gives you a calm, clean workspace for agar, grain and liquid culture work. Easy to assemble with the included instructions and our step by step video.

Rootlab Framed Still Air Box (SAB) with Angled Viewing Window

Most contamination in home mycology comes from moving air. Every draft carries mould spores and bacteria onto open plates, jars and bags. A still air box closes off your work area so the air inside stays put. Spores and dust settle to the floor instead of drifting across your cultures, giving you a much better success rate for sterile work without the cost of a laminar flow hood.

This model uses a rigid fibreglass pole frame rather than a pop-up design, so the walls stay taut and the box holds its shape while you work. The front is angled like a proper lab cabinet, giving you a clear view down onto your work and a natural, comfortable angle for your arms through the sleeves.

Features

  • Angled front viewing window: a sloped clear panel gives you a clear line of sight onto your work area and a comfortable reaching angle.
  • Rigid fibreglass frame: 8.5mm fibreglass poles and corner connectors keep the box stable and the walls tight, with no sagging onto your work.
  • Ultra-clear walls: heavy duty 20 mil ultra-clear EVA panels on every side for full visibility and plenty of light.
  • Two arm sleeves: elasticated fabric sleeves on the front panel close around your arms while you work inside.
  • Zippered side door: a full-length #5 nylon zip lets you load and unload bags, jars and trays without dismantling anything.
  • Durable black base: 210D Oxford fabric floor that is easy to wipe down and makes stray debris easy to spot.
  • Carry bag included: packs down into a Rootlab drawstring bag for storage or transport.
  • Instructions and video: printed assembly instructions in the box, plus a step by step setup video.

What you can use it for

Tips for best results

  • Wipe down the inside of the box, your gloves and every item going in with 70% isopropyl alcohol.
  • Let the box sit closed for a few minutes before you start so the air can settle.
  • Raise your work slightly off the floor, for example on a small rack, so you are working above any settled particles.
  • Move slowly and deliberately. Quick arm movements push air around and undo the benefit of the box.
  • Keep containers open for as short a time as possible.

Framed or pop-up?

If you want the fastest possible setup and pack down, go for one of our pop-up still air boxes: the compact original pop-up (80cm x 50cm x 45cm) or the XL pop-up, which is the same size as this model. If you want a box that holds its shape, with a rigid fibreglass frame and an angled viewing window, this framed model is the better choice.

We also sell a large Rootlab branded XL Monotub if you need space for bigger projects.Best for putting a whole monotub inside as an example.
