Description

Sterilised Hemp Hurd Substrate Bags with Flour
Available in two sizes: 700g and 3kg.

Our pre-sterilised, ready-to-use Hemp Hurd Substrate is a clean base for growing mycelium and making mycelium objects from hemp.

The substrate is hydrated to field capacity, which gives it the ideal moisture level for mycelium growth, and it uses the cellulose-rich structure of Australian-grown hemp hurd. Hemp hurd is a byproduct of industrial hemp with naturally high cellulose content, which mycelium takes to readily. It is clean, low-dust and finely processed, so you get consistent, even colonisation right through the bag. We add flour to speed up colonisation and encourage a thicker mycelium mat.

How to use these bags

Open a bag and inoculate it with grain spawn of your choice. Always do this inside a still air box or in front of a laminar flow hood. Wait until the bag has visibly colonised to about 20 to 40 per cent.

Next, mix the bag through evenly and tip the contents into your mould. Compress with medium pressure, wrap the mould in cling wrap and add a few holes so the mycelium can breathe, then carry on with your process.

If you are using our Grain Spawn and don’t want to use it all at once, or you have inoculated a substrate bag and had to cut it open with no way to reseal it, take a look at our Large Sealing Bag Clips.

Source and quality of hemp hurd

Our hemp hurd is 100 per cent Australian-grown and processed, sourced from high-quality industrial hemp crops. It is untreated, chemical-free and finely chopped for consistent results.

Handling and storage

Use your substrate bags within 14 days of arrival so they don’t dry out or risk contamination. Always open a bag carefully inside a still air box or in front of a flow hood, as opening it the wrong way raises the risk of contamination.

If contamination does show up, it can be hard to tell whether it came from Rootlab, from shipping, or from your own environment. Because of this, we recommend holding the bag for at least 5 days after arrival and doing a smell and visual check before you inoculate, while still staying inside the 14 day window so the bag doesn’t dry out.

Rootlab ships the bag taped inside a box. When it arrives, remove the tape carefully and keep the bag upright. Once you have inoculated it with grain spawn, let it colonise somewhere with good airflow, out of direct sunlight and away from any direct source of heat or cold.
