About This Kit

3KG

Yield: 800g in one flush

Our 3 kg kits are made fresh to order, just like real mushroom farms use. No fancy box, no sitting in cold storage for weeks. Skipping the packaging keeps your cost down by $10, and we pass that saving straight to you. We call these kits “almost ready to fruit”.

Lead time applies to this kit. The lead time shown above the “Add to Cart” button is the time needed to prepare your order. A product showing as “in stock” means it can be prepared within that lead time, not that it is ready to ship immediately.

What’s Inside
Everything you need is included. Just add water and follow the simple instructions.
Our substrate is a special Master’s Mix: a blend of sawdust, lupin pellets and water, inoculated with about 300g of millet grain spawn to give your mushrooms the best possible start.

Microplastic Free

Soy Allergen Free

Gluten Free

Our bags: Your kit is made with Unicorn grow bags, tested to not leach microplastics into your substrate.

Brown Shimeji: Why It’s Special
Brown Shimeji (also called Buna-shimeji or Beech Mushroom) forms attractive tight clusters of small, slightly nutty caps on crunchy stems.

Shimeji primes at cooler temperatures for pinning and performs best with consistent, cool fruiting conditions.

Culinary and Medicinal
Shimeji has a pleasant umami, slightly nutty flavour and holds its texture well in stir fries, soups and sautés. It is usually cooked before eating, as raw shimeji can taste bitter and cause stomach discomfort.. Hypsizygus species have also been studied for bioactive compounds with antioxidant and possible immunomodulatory activity, although culinary use is the most common reason it is grown.

Shelf life: Fresh Shimeji is best used immediately for the best texture, or refrigerated for 3–7 days. Unopened kits keep for a few weeks in a cool, dark place, although yield may reduce if stored too long.

Growing Conditions
Humidity: 85–95% during pinning and fruiting. Use gentle misting or a humidifier or fruiting chamber to keep humidity steady.
Light: Low to moderate indirect light on a consistent day and night cycle. Shimeji needs light for normal cap formation, but not intense direct sun.
Air: Regular fresh air exchange to prevent long stems and encourage tight caps. Gentle airflow without strong drafts.
Temperature: 12°C–18°C.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Forcing fruiting too early: Triggering fruiting before colonisation is well advanced increases contamination risk and reduces yields. Be patient.
Humidity and fresh air balance: Low humidity causes aborted pins, while too little fresh air exchange leads to long stems and small caps. Keep humidity high but provide gentle fresh air exchange.

⚠️ Spore Warning
All mushrooms produce spores as part of their natural growth cycle. Some people may be sensitive or allergic to spores, so be mindful of where you grow them. Harvesting on time will help you avoid heavy sporulation.

Checkout out our fine Misting Spray Bottle to produce tiny droplets and keep humidity high. The size of droplets formed can easily be evaporated, and this constant evaporation signals mycelium to pin.
